There are many magazines and newspapers for sale but some are popular and generate millions of dollars worth of sales and some don’t. Why?

What’s the difference between the magazines and newspapers that sell and ones that don’t and how does it apply to your website?

  • All newspapers and magazines have a similar appearance, they all have good graphic design and similar paper stock, they contain similar images and use similar fonts.
  • All newspapers and magazines generally have good articles and content. They have talented writers and good marketing campaigns.

Yet one newspaper or magazine is still more popular than another.

The reason for this applies to your website and can be the difference between a person buying from you or buying from your competitor.

It may seem obvious that the content of a newspaper or magazine is where the real value is but often it is overlooked by businesses, small AND large.

Just like a newspaper or magazine, if you can’t grab a persons attention as they are “walking past” your website then they will keep on walking until they see what they want.

People are interested in getting an outcome and this is how you must think when you write your website.

This is what most people do when they write content for their website (even large corporations).

In fact I once spoke with an international wealth management corporation about redesigning their website and decided not to work with them because I could see that the marketing manager was stubborn about what they thought was right.

Here’s an example of the mistake they were making.

  • Our wealth management services are the best in Australia and we have 10 years of experience. We have lots of clients from small business to full time investors and have helped our clients to achieve better results in their wealth management strategies.

Now, that looks like a normal thing that people write on their website because it is. But if you want results then you need to focus more on WHY clients want the services rather than WHAT you do for people. Like I said, people don’t care about you, they just care about what they want.

The reason the popular magazines and newspapers are popular is because they KNOW what their target market want and they give it to them. It is not a fluke!

Good selling is about knowing your clients and appealing to the emotional reason that they want your product. If you do not write your website content in a way that makes people think “Hey, these people understand me” then they will move to a website where they DO feel that.

You need to ask your target market WHY they want what they want and WRITE THAT on your website.

If you do this it makes it much easier to write content when you’re having your website designed rather than trying to invent something that you HOPE your target market will respond to.
